Don’t Sweat It—Camera-Ready Makeup Tips
Tips from Meghan Wick, Founder of Fern & Flame Studio
Let’s be honest—most people don’t love being in front of the camera. Throw in August heat, nerves, and high-def video? Even the most confident among us can feel off.
But great on-camera presence doesn’t start with the camera—it starts before it. With intentional styling that works for you, not against you.
I’m Meghan Wick, founder of Fern & Flame Studio—a beauty and branding space where I help people show up looking their best in person, sounding like themselves online, and feeling like themselves on camera.
Whether you’re filming a reel, taking headshots, or getting ready for a big event, here’s what you need to know…
What works in the mirror doesn’t always work on screen. So let’s talk about what does.
For Women:
• Go bolder than your everyday makeup. Cameras soften everything, so your go-to “light glam” might look invisible.
→ Try going one shade deeper in blush and bronzer to bring warmth and shape back to your face.
• Stick to matte or satin finishes. Dewy looks amazing in real life—but in photos or video (especially in summer heat), it can quickly turn greasy.
→ Use a matte primer or a light dusting of translucent powder on your T-zone.
• Avoid shimmer-heavy eye looks. They reflect light and can distract on camera. → Opt for soft neutrals or classic tones instead.
• Frame your features. Brows, lashes, and lips give your face structure on camera— don’t skip them!
→ A filled-in brow, waterproof mascara, and a lip with contrast go a long way.
For Men:
• Control shine and dryness. HD video picks up everything, from forehead glare to dry patches.
→ Exfoliate the night before, moisturize the morning of, and use blotting wipes right before your shoot.
• Groom facial hair + brows. Even a rugged look benefits from a little polish. → Use beard oil and trim strays to keep things looking intentional.
• Concealer is fair game. Got a breakout or redness? Totally normal. → A touch of concealer on problem spots will even things out without looking like makeup.
• Powder isn’t just for pros. A light dusting of translucent powder on the nose and forehead reduces distractions.
→ It’s subtle—but makes a big difference on video.
When your styling supports your story, everything flows with more ease. You show up more confidently, feel more like yourself, and spend less time fixing things in post—and more time loving what you captured.
Need support before your shoot?
I offer camera-ready styling for both women and men—whether I’m behind the lens or not. While I exclusively shoot headshots in-house, I frequently collaborate with photographers and videographers to help clients feel prepped, polished, and confident for their portrait session or video feature.
From natural refinement to elevated glam, my goal is always the same: to help you walk in grounded and walk out camera-ready.
